LASER FUNGAL NAIL TREATMENT

The technology

Fiona is the first and only practitioner currently offering this therapy on the Sunshine Coast, and is located at our Noosa Podiatry clinic.

The Lunula low level laser system is an innovative treatment for damaged and fungal nail infections. The Lunula is a Medical Device and has been cleared for use in Europe according to the Medical Device Directive (93/42/EEC). The Lunula delivers a combination of two very low power lasers simultaneously at very specific wavelengths to the surface of your feet. The lasers generate a rotating beam and can cover a large area of the foot to completely treat infections within the nails and nail bed. The two lasers used in the Lunula are:

  • Blue (405nm), this acts directly and specifically upon the fungus and causes changes in its outer wall, this weakens it significantly, allowing the body’s immune system to attack and destroy it.
  • Red (635nm), is acting upon the body’s natural immune cells – fortifying them, thus making them more active and able to neutralize and destroy the weakened fungus. In addition, the red light can stimulate and improve blood flow; this additional blood flow brings nutrients and additional immune cells to the affected area speeding up the treatment process.

The Fungal Nail Treatment will last for 12-minutes per hand/foot and you will feel no sensation, the lasers are not harmful to you in any way as they use very low power settings. The treatment will be repeated at weekly intervals, the number of treatments required depends upon the severity of your infection, usually 4.

The Lunula Low-Level Cold Laser System delivers a combination of 2, low powered lasers, acting simultaneously at specific wavelengths. The lasers generate rotating beams to completely treat infections within the nails, nail bed and surrounding skin.

Specifically, the 2 lasers used in the Lunula Cold Laser are:

Blue (405nm). This laser acts specifically and directly upon the fungal cells and causes changes in the outer wall, weakening it significantly, allowing the body’s immune system to attack and destroy it.

Red (635nm). This wavelength acts upon the body’s natural immune cells – strengthening them, making them more active and able to kill the weakened fungus. In addition, the red light improves blood flow, bringing nutrients and additional immune cells to the affected area which speeds up the treatment process

The Lunula’s patented delivery system ensures that all infected tissue, nail bed and most importantly, the proximal germinal/matrix tissue are properly targeted and treated.

The Lunula Laser has been clinically proven to promote the growth of a clear, healthy nails. Nevertheless, re-infection is possible. To reduce this risk, key strategies can be implemented to successfully keep your newly treated nails clear and free of re-infection. Proper nail hygiene and care is essential in the fight against re-infection.

Avoid trauma to nails.

Over 90% of fungal nail infections occur due to trauma to the nail. Over 50% of the population are carriers of fungus on their skin (in normal healthy conditions) and the fungus will find a way in to the nail bed and plate. Fungus is an opportunistic organism so anything you can do to reduce this risk is a huge help in prevention. Keep nails short so they do not get damaged on shoes, do not wear tight footwear.

Treat all footwear regularly with anti-fungal sprays and the SteriShoe® UV light application. Fungal spores live in shoes & can easily re-infect your nails and feet. Sterishoes sanitizes the inside of shoes by using germicidal ultraviolet (UVC) light. 1 pair of shoes are treated free of charge with your consultation. StriShoes are available for purchase.

Wear breathable footwear when possible.

Wear 100% cotton or bamboo socks and changes them often, wash at 60 degrees.

Keep feet protected in shared settings.

Keep feet dry throughout the day.

Recognise and treat tinea pedis (athletes foot).

Perform preventive care if you suffer from a chronic medical disorder.

If you receive pedicures be sure to review their sanitation/sterilisation procedures of instruments and foot baths.

In addition to practicing good nail hygiene, application of an antifungal spray to selected surface areas can reduce the risk of re-infection.
